杜克大學可選文書題目
Duke University seeks a talented, engaged student body that embodies the wide range of human experience; we believe that the diversity of our students makes our community stronger. If you'd like to share a perspective you bring or experiences you've had to help us understand you better-perhaps related to a community you belong to, your sexual orientation or gender identity, or your family or cultural background-we encourage you to do so. Real people are reading your application, and we want to do our best to understand and appreciate the real people applying to Duke. (250 word limit)

My flushed face breaks the surface of the water as I stop to fix my goggles. My eyes ache from the chlorine and my lungs burn for want of oxygen. But little ripples of water cool my face, the spinning fans heal my eyes, the moist air fills my lungs, and, despite the aches and pains, the pool is the most comfortable place in the world.
I have been competitively swimming since I was eight years old. I’ve found the pool to be a place of refuge. It’s where I go to sort out problems at school or at home, study, write papers, vent, cry, and detach myself from the rest of the world. It may sound weird that I can study or write papers while at swim practice, but the water is a place where I have complete focus. Swim practice is where I do my best thinking. During warm up, I reviewed the formulas for nine different organic molecules. I wrote my entire rough draft of my research paper for English during the main set. Because of several cool downs, I can now name the presidents backwards in less than two minutes. Swimming provides such solitude and concentration that now the water is more of a study room than my desk.
The water rushes over my head, sucking me in. Silence envelopes me; the only sound I hear is the whirring of the filters and my own thoughts. I feel the smooth tiles of the wall on my feet, my only connection to reality. I push off and now I am completely alone.
Methodically swimming laps sounds boring to most people. People can’t understand how to entertain themselves without any sensory stimulation. Nothing to see, hear, taste, smell or touch? No thanks! But to me, the cold water provides security that I can’t find elsewhere. My room is no escape; it’s in the center of my house! But if I’m in the water I can scream and cry with sadness or excitement without anyone hearing me. When I want to release some anger about a test, I swim. When I get that unavoidable teenage angst, I swim. When I feel like nothing is going right, I swim. On the other hand, sometimes I have so much energy that swimming is the only way to release it. So much joy, I need swimming to express it. Swimming keeps my life in homeostasis; it takes two warring extremes of emotion and negotiates a period of détente.
My legs are synchronized and I feel the resistance of the water. My arms move quickly and rhythmically, pushing the water behind me. I lift my head to the side, just far enough out of the water to breath. There’s quick contact with the world before I slip back into the peaceful water.
Swimming has been a huge part of my life for ten years. For more than half my life, I’ve found peace beneath the surface of the water. It’s where I figure out my problems and solve them. If I was to find the meaning of life, I’d probably find it at 5:15 am during swim practice. The pool is where my past, present, and future resolutions lie, and it’s where I’ll continue to go whether I’m happy or sad to find peace under the surface of the water.
I touch the side other side of the pool. The smooth tiled edge contrasts against my wrinkled hands. I turn around and push off. Another lap to go…

In a volleyball match, a point is scored on every play.
My team from North Carolina is fighting for an upset against a Richmond team. The fast-paced match determines if we continue in the tournament or go home. We entered the tournament very poorly ranked, but have earned a spot in the second flight playoff. We have lost the first of three sets and are now down by one as the second set draws to a close. Every point is vital.
The serve comes, a laser, and my teammate Cole can’t get his body behind the ball. He does manage to pop it up. It is now my responsibility to sprint to it and make my touch better. I have to turn my body sideways to avoid hitting the net as I jump and set the ball to Alex, our team’s best hitter. Even though my set did not have the perfect tempo, his timing is excellent.
As he uncoils on the ball, I yell, ”Cover! Cover!” We need to back him up in case he gets blocked by the enormous man lined up across from him. It must be nice to be 6’ 7” flashes across my mind.
The other team handles the hit with ease and sets that same giant. My teammate and I go up to block him, but his height and ability allow him to turn and hit the ball right beside my block. The ball bounces inbounds. Their point.
“My bad, my bad,” I say. ”I’ll put up a stronger block. Hey Alex, I’ll get that set better too. Nice pass on the serve. Let’s get another up!”
I am my team’s setter, the quarterback of volleyball, and its captain. I can’t get discouraged; my team needs me to lead. I focus on the rally to come.
To prepare the next play, I give hand signals to each of my hitters, telling them where they should be to receive the set and hit. Because a player cannot touch the ball twice in a row, volleyball requires immense trust and teamwork.
I give Alex a meaningful look. “Put this one away!” I say.
He is the go-to hitter. We have played together over five years, on the lone boy’s volleyball team in NC. I have faith that if I can get him an accessible ball he will put us in the lead at this crucial moment.
I then turn to two of the back row players responsible for passing the next monster serve about to come at us. One of them has been playing for three years; the other is in his first year. This inexperience is due to the rarity of male volleyball players in our state. We always struggle to find enough players. The club we play for is reluctant to allow us more court time to practice, which also hurts. The girls’ teams bring in much more money and get priority.
“Get this one up. It’s a fast jump topspin, so get behind it,” I tell them.
“Hey, I got it!” the first year player, Martin, says. “I’ve got your short, Cole.”
This elicits a smile from me. We have been working on communication and helping each other out on the court. Martin is simply saying that if the ball is served short in the court between him and Cole, he will get it.
Looking at our competition, I relay who will be hitting from the other side of the net. Then I turn to my team awaiting the pass, encouraged that we now all know where to be standing before the play starts, another display of progress.
We are ready. Previous actions don’t matter.
In a volleyball match, a point is scored on every play.
